Wichita Orthobiologic Treatment

Meet our team and learn about orthobiologic treatments.

Orthobiologics are used in Orthopedics to help injuries and tissue heal more robustly and more quickly. They are used to improve the healing potential of injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They are also used to aid the healing of fractures. These products are typically made from substances that are naturally found in your body.

Common orthobiologics can include platelet rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow concentrate, certain fat grafts, and other tissues. Some of these therapies can commonly be referred to as stem cell therapies. Stem cells are of two basic types – embryonic stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Embryonic stem cells are found early in the developmental phase of life. There is no current use of embryonic stem cells approved for Orthopedics. MSCs are found in adults and are considered to be an orthobiologic substance. When they are used in concentrations many times the normal, they can potentially help speed up the healing processes.

Orthobiologics have evolved and are significantly influencing modern Orthopedic surgical practice. There are many published results of laboratory as well as clinical studies using orthobiologics with variable results. However, a clear consensus over the best biological substances, method of preparation, and indications for usage is lacking.
